Live vs Pasteurised Akkermansia: Which Should You Choose?

The science does not support that simple ranking.

Live and pasteurised Akkermansia are different biological preparations, and both have been investigated in human research.

The better buying decision depends on:

  • what form the product contains,
  • what evidence exists for that preparation,
  • how the product is stored,
  • and whether the claims match the studies.

What Does “Live” Mean?

A live Akkermansia product contains viable microorganisms.

To qualify scientifically as a probiotic, a live preparation should be:

A label saying “live Akkermansia” does not automatically prove all four.

What Does “Pasteurised” Mean?

Pasteurisation uses controlled heat treatment to make the cells non-viable.

The preparation may still contain:

  • whole inactivated cells,
  • membrane structures,
  • proteins,
  • and other bacterial components.

Because the cells are no longer alive, pasteurised Akkermansia does not meet the conventional definition of a probiotic.

Does Pasteurised Mean Postbiotic?

Not automatically.

A postbiotic is a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or components that confers a demonstrated health benefit.

Simply killing a bacterium is not enough.

What Human Evidence Exists for Live Akkermansia?

A 2019 proof-of-concept study in Nature Medicine tested both live and pasteurised A. muciniphila in adults with overweight or obesity and insulin resistance.

The study administered 10^10 bacteria daily for three months.

Both preparations were reported as safe and well tolerated under the study conditions.

This was an important early human trial but was small and exploratory.

What Human Evidence Exists for Pasteurised Akkermansia?

Pasteurised Akkermansia has attracted substantial attention because of human intervention studies.

In the 2019 trial, several metabolic measurements changed in the pasteurised group.

In 2026, a larger randomized controlled trial studied a specific pasteurised A. muciniphila MucT preparation during a 24-week weight-maintenance phase after initial diet-induced weight loss.

Participants receiving that specific preparation regained less weight on average than placebo.

This strengthens evidence for that preparation.

But it does not prove that every pasteurised product will reproduce the same outcome.

Is Live Better Because It Can Reproduce?

Not necessarily.

The ability to remain viable is biologically important for a probiotic.

But reproduction is not the only mechanism by which bacterial preparations can interact with the host.

Pasteurised cells retain structural components that can still be biologically active.

Clinical outcomes should decide the comparison, not the intuitive assumption that “alive must be stronger.”

Is Pasteurised Better Because It Is More Stable?

It may be easier to formulate because viability does not need to be maintained.

But “more stable” does not automatically mean:

  • Which strain is used?
  • Which form has evidence for the outcome I care about?
  • Is the daily amount clearly stated?
  • Does the company explain how stability is maintained?
  • Are claims realistic?

Should You Choose a Product That Uses the Same Form as the Study?

That creates a stronger evidence match.

If a product cites a study of pasteurised MucT but contains a different live strain, the evidence match is weaker.

Likewise, a study of live bacteria should not automatically be used to substantiate an unrelated pasteurised formulation.

Safety Considerations

Safety is preparation- and population-specific.

EFSA's 2025 assessment of a specific pasteurised Akkermansia novel food found defined doses safe for adolescents aged 12 to under 18, but noted that safety during pregnancy and lactation had not been established for the requested extension.

This illustrates why broad statements such as:

“Akkermansia is safe for everyone”

are inappropriate.
