Rather than being known primarily as a bacterium associated with fermented foods, Akkermansia muciniphila is a natural member of the human intestinal microbiome that is especially adapted to the mucus-rich environment covering the intestinal lining.

Researchers have also detected Akkermansia or closely related bacterial signatures elsewhere in the digestive tract, including parts of the small intestine and appendix. However, the colon and its mucus layer remain the main ecological niche associated with Akkermansia.

Understanding where Akkermansia lives helps explain why scientists are so interested in its relationship with the gut barrier and the wider microbiome.

Akkermansia is an anaerobic bacterium, meaning it grows in environments with very little oxygen.

Can Akkermansia Be Found in the Small Intestine?

Akkermansia-like sequences have even been reported in human milk in some studies.

But this requires careful interpretation.

Detecting bacterial DNA in a location does not necessarily prove that a large, active Akkermansia population permanently lives there.

The bacterium's best-established ecological niche remains the mucus layer of the large intestine.

How Common Is Akkermansia in Humans?

  • and approximately 90% of the studied children by 12 months.

  • diet,

  • medication,
  • health status,
  • microbiome composition,
  • and measurement method.

For this reason, there is no universal Akkermansia percentage that automatically defines a healthy gut.

Does Stool Testing Show Where Akkermansia Lives?

Not exactly.

Most consumer microbiome tests analyse stool samples.

Finding Akkermansia DNA in stool can provide information about its presence and relative abundance in material leaving the gastrointestinal tract.

But a stool sample is not a direct map of the intestinal mucus layer.

Microbial communities can differ between intestinal contents, mucus-associated communities, different regions of the colon and faecal samples.

Therefore, stool testing can provide useful information about microbial composition, but it cannot perfectly show where every microorganism is located or how active it is within the intestine.

Does More Akkermansia Mean a Healthier Gut?

Not necessarily.

A higher percentage does not automatically mean better digestion, a stronger gut barrier, better metabolism or better overall health.

Likewise, low Akkermansia does not automatically indicate disease.

The goal should not simply be:

“Get as much Akkermansia as possible.”

A healthier way to think about microbiome science is to focus on the overall intestinal ecosystem.
