This helps explain why fermentable fibres are scientifically interesting, but it does not mean every inulin-containing product has the same effect.

A 2025 study by Zhou and colleagues used an in vitro human faecal fermentation model to evaluate the prebiotic potential of Poria cocos polysaccharides. The research examined microbial utilisation, selected short-chain fatty acid changes and selected microbial composition changes in a laboratory fermentation setting.

This was not a human clinical trial in people consuming Poria cocos. Laboratory fermentation findings cannot be assumed to represent clinical effects in the human body.
